Alex Otti Abia State governor has banned the use of fireworks, including knockouts, bangers, and other related explosive materials, during the forthcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations.
According to state government, this is to ensure the safety and security of lives and property during the Yuletide season.
Okey Kanu Commissioner for Information, announced this in a statement on Friday, saying that blasting of explosives can be exploited by criminals to create panic and perpetrate heinous crimes under the guise of festive celebrations.
The Government have given the chairmen of all 17 local government areas in the state with the traditional rulers and town unions, to make sure that the instruction is carried out to the full in their domains, in concert with the security agencies.
Abia residents are to comply with the directive, saying that violators will be made to face the full weight of the law.The government further directed security agencies to ensure strict compliance with the ban.
