The Abia State Government has revealed that its modular refinery situated at the Abia Industrial Innovation Park (AIIP) in Owaza, Ukwa West Council Area, is set to commence production in 2025.

Prince Okey Kanu, the state Commissioner for Information and Culture, conveyed this information during a press briefing after the Executive Council Meeting.

Highlighting the significance of the project, Prince Kanu emphasised the commitment of the government to ensure the refinery’s timely completion. He stressed that the modular refinery, a flagship project at the industrial park, is anticipated to generate around two thousand direct job opportunities, with a potential for thousands more in indirect employment. Additionally, it aims to contribute to the local economy by providing refined products for the citizens and bolstering the state’s revenue base.

Professor Joel Ogbonna, the Commissioner for Petroleum, underscored the transformative agenda of the new government in swiftly establishing the industrial innovation park. He mentioned the acquisition of approximately two thousand hectares of land in Owaza, revealing the untapped oil and gas resources in Abia State. Professor Ogbonna expressed optimism about converting these resources into wealth and job opportunities.

Addressing infrastructure developments, Prince Kanu informed that Governor Alex Otti was set to commission four roads, with Jubilee Road in Aba already completed and the others nearing completion. He also mentioned the upcoming commissioning of renovated hospitals in Ummunneato Igbere and Okpuala Ngwa.
