Abia State government has directed that History and Igbo language be made compulsory in the state secondary schools with immediate effect.
The government has also shut down the online portal through which interested teachers were asked to apply for employment following the expiration of application deadline.
Of the 29,797 applications received during the period, 9,371 were shortlisted for the next selection process, where 5,000 successful ones will eventually be employed.
The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, who disclosed this to reporters said 5,000 teachers are to be employed following the astronomical increase in public school enrolment.
Mr. Kanu said with the reintroduction of history, a new curriculum would be developed for it, while Igbo language is now compulsory for primary to senior secondary pupils to make them grounded in their mother tongue.
