The death toll from Both stampedes that occurred on Saturday during charity events in Anambra State and Nigeria’s capital Abuja has jumped to 37, according to officials.

While 27 people were reportedly killed in the Okija area of Anambra, Southeastern Nigeria, 10 others were confirmed dead in Abuja, North-central.

Many others are still receiving treatment in various hospitals.

The incidents happened when people were rushing for the rice being distributed for indigent citizens ahead of Christmas celebrations.

Different state governments have mandated individuals and groups planning charity events expected to host more than 250 attendees to register with authorized safety agencies.

“Any individual, group, or organization planning to distribute items or host large gatherings must obtain clearance from the state government and register with the safety commissions,” said Gbenga Omotosho, Lagos state commissioner for information and strategy.

Anambra State Police command has given an update on the tragic stampede that happened in Okija, Anambra State on Saturday, during an event to distribute rice to indigent people.

Spokesperson of the command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga said the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam visited the victims in the hospital and condoled with the families and friends of those who lost their lives.

Ikenga said: “The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam visited the hospital where the victims of the tragic stampede that occurred on 21/12/2024 in Okija, Ihiala local government area are receiving treatment and regrettably observed that 22 people lost their lives.”

enga quoted the commissioner as commiserating with family and friends of the deceased, while wishing those who sustained injury a quick recovery.

He said investigation into the unfortunate incident was still ongoing and that police remained dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of Ndi Anambra on crime prevention, responding promptly and effectively to emergencies, protecting vulnerable populations and fostering a sense of security and community.
