Nigerian Dental Therapists’ Association (NDTA) Ebonyi State chapter, on Tuesday, kicked off 2025 Oral health day celebration with the sensitization of school pupils on the best ways to take care of their Oral health.

The sensitization program took place at Nkaliki Unuhu primary school 2, in Abakaliki,Ebonyi capital, where over 300 school pupils and teachers benefited from the sensitization program.

Participants were taught that brushing twice a day, morning and night, using the right toothpaste and brushing the way and above all, visit to dentist, at least once in six months are some of the ways to take adequate care of their Oral health needs.

Speaking during the sensitization program, the chairman, Nigerian Dental Therapists’ Association, (NDTA), Ebonyi State chapter, Comrade Nwafor Samuel Uwaoma, stated that the sensitization program is aimed at inculcating in the children the right attitude to Oral health care, and expressed optimism that the sensitization would offer the children better opportunity to understand ways of maintaining good oral health hygiene.

“Today is the beginning of world Oral health day, 2025. We’re here to sensitize the pupils of Nkaliki Unuhu primary school 2. The crowd of the pupils are overwhelming and we’ve sensitized them on the need to maintain good oral hygiene and going forward, we want to see how more we can reach out to these children because if we catch them young, the better for the society. The society will be free of oral health issues. They now know how to maintain good oral hygiene”.

He encouraged the pupils to put to use, what they were taught and equally extend same to friends and family members.

“To the pupils, my advice is, take this message home, take it to your parents, take it to your brothers and sisters. To parents, I want you to encourage your children to put in practice what we have taught them. Ensure they brush twice a day, morning and night. In the morning after their breakfast and at night, at night before they go to bed”.

the wife of Ebonyi State Governor, Chief Mrs Mary-Maudline Uzoamaka Nwifuru, Korlyns Pharmaceutical and Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi State council.

“We’re grateful to wife of the governor, Chief Mrs Mary-Maudline Nwifiru for this enablement to reach out to these children. We’re also grateful to NUJ, Ebonyi State Council for supporting us. We’re also grateful to Korlyns Pharmaceutical for giving us oral dental kits with which we distributed to the pupils.

On her part, the Chief Dental Therapist with Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakliki, Comrade Eze Ngozi Celestina, emphasized the need for people to take care of their Oral health, noting that if the mouth is heathy the mind will be healthy as well. She recommended that people should visit dentist at least once in six month for their Oral health care.

The Headmistress of Nkaliki Unuhu primary school 2, Mrs Ogoejiofor Patricia Okereke, expressed joy over the choice of the school for the sensitization and urged the pupils to put to practice all that they were taught.

She appreciated the wife of Ebonyi State Governor, Chief Mrs Mary-Maudline Nwifuru for partnering with the Dental Therapists Association who brought the sensitization to them.

High point of the sensitization program was the distribution of tooth paste and brushes to over 300 Pupils and teachers and treatment of some pupils with oral needs.

The activities marking the 2025 World Oral health Day with the theme: ‘Happy Mouth, Happy mind’, will take place between Tuesday 18th to Thursday 20th March 2025 in the State and it is in partnership with Chief Mrs Nwifuru’s Foundation known as Better Health for rural women, Children and internally displaced Foundation, (BERWO).
