Some senators from the Southeast region on Thursday, March 27, 2025, staged a walkout from the Nigerian Senate following the failure of the Red Chamber to immortalize a former chairman of the National Electoral Commission, Humphrey Nwosu.

Politics Nigeria reports that the Senate had thrown out a motion by Enyinnaya Abaribe for the renaming of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INCE) – the defunct NEC – after the late Nwosu.

The late NEC chairman during his tenure presided over the June 12, 1993, presidential election which was truncated by the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida (retired).

Southeast lawmakers, led by Abaribe, it is important for the Tinubu-led government to honor the late Nwosu who they described as the man who brought election consciousness to Nigeria.

Abaribe said, “We said that even if it is not done today, another government will do this. We are still looking forward to the Tnubu government.

If you recall, Tinubu was seen and has always been seen as a June 12 warrior and therefore, all the elements that make up June 12, including the conduct of the election and like we said, if there was no election, there would been no June 12.
